Dustin Zachary: A Modern Vagabond

It takes a lot of preparation, planning and a good dose of courage to chase the ideals of a life on the road. Oliberté has always celebrated the path less traveled, and we hope to support and encourage more people to live the life of Dustin. 1. Your photo feed is amazing, what kind of camera set up are you using?

I’ve been shooting the Sony A7 series for a few years now. Originally the A7R and now the A7R II. My lens setup is pretty minimal of late. A 16-35mm f/2.8 with a circular polarizer that rarely comes off. And a 70-200mm f/2.8 when I can manage the extra weight.

2. What’s the favorite place you’ve traveled, and what’s something noteworthy that happened when you were there?

Oh man… that’s a hard one. I’d have to say Indonesia. Not for any one particular reason or moment. But for the fact that everything just seemed to fall into place against all odds. The energy there is absolutely incredible.

3. What’s on your bucket list for travel destinations?

My top three destinations right now are Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Jordan.

4. Any advice for someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?

The best advice I can think to give is to stop thinking of what you want to do and just do it. I however still have to remind myself to do the same. But when it comes to adventure… I waited far too long to begin my journey. And wish that I had realized sooner how it would change my life for the better.

5. What’s one piece of gear you couldn’t live without while travelling?

That’s easy… my camera.

6. What’s one important thing you’ve learned on your travels?

Respect the locals. I’m naturally predisposed to appreciative interactions and it’s served me well in my travels. But I’ve seen first hand, time and again, the negative ramifications of staying in your own cultural mindset. Be polite and open minded and you’d surprised at the opportunities afforded to you that others may never get to experience.
